Julie Jones a Durham resident, crafts functional, wheel thrown stoneware mined from central NC that is fired in her wood kiln located 20 miles north of Durham in Stem, NC. Keeping with the tradition of generations of NC Potters, the firing process entails throwing 15 pounds of table salt into the kiln when it reaches a temperature of 2300 F. The salt reacts with the clay and makes a glaze, coating the pottery with a white, brown and orange color. The salt and wood ash make each piece unique and the final glaze a serendipitous mix of many variable factors. Julie hopes her pots will be enjoyed and used everyday around the kitchen table.
